How Your “Gut Feeling” Can Lead You To Your Destiny

I’ve always had this deep connection with my “gut feeling”. Truth is, If it don’t feel right I’m not rocking with it. As an entrepreneur, you will be making deals, signing contracts, and making moves that sometimes may or may not be what’s right for you or your business. That’s when you tune in to that inner voice, the voice deep inside that’s saying “girl this is not a good idea”.

Down Memory Lane

Let me take you back to when I made one of the biggest decisions of my life. In 2010 I had just finished college (late due to hurricane Katrina) and I was without a job and no money. My plan was to move to New York and wing it as a performer(professional dancer), but something inside continuously said, “You don’t need to move right now”.

With in the next few days I  was set to go to travel to New York for a dance audition that if successful would force me to move to the Big Apple, but I wanted to talk with someone to see if I was making the right decision because again my gut feeling was off. I spoke to serval people including my mom and mentors and they all supported me. It wasn’t until I spoke to one of my mentors and former dance teacher, Grace Hamilton, that I realized that my purpose was much bigger than me. Although I had these plans as a professional dancers, my calling was much bigger.

Should you over think it or get another opinion?

The next day I had a dance parent(Dance teacher vibes) that asked me “Leigha you ever thought about opening your own studio?” I’ve been asked that a million times but this time I felt something different. I instantly thought about my life for the past 10 years and realized it consisted of two things: teaching dance and creating choreography. No matter if it was locally or traveling I was teaching and creating. That night I prayed and ask god for direction. I wanted him to send a sign that was clear as day. Even when we ask for a “in your face” sign, we don’t always get it.

Should you always listen to your “gut feeling”?

That’s when I went to the old trusted “gut feeling”. And there it was, I knew what my next moved need to be. Was I 100% with it, hell no because I really wanted to make that move to New York. But was it the right move. Yes it was. Had I moved to New York I don’t know where I would be or what I would be doing but I do know that deciding to open my own studio has not only bought joy and purpose to my life but it’s allowed me to have a career that I’m truly passionate about that allows me to financially take care of myself

Is your gut feeling ever wrong?

Intuition is a natural part of emotions and contributes to the part of our body that feels. Just like our body can feel when something is wrong we can also feel when something Is right. But its something about gut feeling and intuition that can brings on unpredictability and doesn’t warrant great result. But just like we practice at sports, talents, and our professional careers, the more we sharpen out intuition skills that more comfortable we feel with making decisions that are intuition based.

Had I decided to move to New York I probably would not be an entrepreneur or travel as much as I do now. I still say that was one of the best decisions I ever made and I give thanks to God an my listen to my “gut feeling”.
