Pulling Up In Life
I’ve been dancing my whole life. And every since I was young the words “pull up” has been etched in my brain. I would hear those words in every ballet class and now as a teacher I find myself mumbling those same words to my dance students. But as a dance educator and movement specialist that sees the beauty and value of how dance is more than just movement of the body, I’ve constantly thought about how “pulling up” doesn’t only help to create balance in our bodies for dance, but can help create balance in our every day lives as well.
In dance, "pulling up" refers to a fundamental technique used to achieve proper posture and alignment. It involves engaging specific muscles to create a sense of lift and length through the body, allowing dancers to stand tall, maintain balance, and execute movements with greater control and precision. "Pulling up" is particularly important in ballet and other dance styles that prioritize strong technique and graceful aesthetics.
But I am one that the term “pulling up” can smoothly be applied to anyones life.
"Pulling up" in life is a metaphorical expression that refers to the act of elevating oneself, improving one's circumstances, or making positive changes to achieve personal growth, success, and well-being. It signifies taking proactive steps to enhance various aspects of life, often involving self-improvement, determination, and resilience. "Pulling up" can encompass different areas, such as career, relationships, health, and personal development. It implies a conscious effort to rise above challenges, obstacles, and limitations to reach a higher level of achievement and fulfillment.
"Pulling up" in life and "pulling up" in dance share some similarities in their underlying principles, even though they are applied in different contexts. Here's how they are alike:
Engagement and Effort: Both concepts require active engagement and effort. In dance, you engage core muscles to lift and align; in life, you put effort into improving your circumstances and making positive changes.
Control and Balance: "Pulling up" in dance helps control movements and maintain balance; similarly, in life, it's about achieving balance and control in various areas, such as work, relationships, and personal well-being.
Growth and Improvement: In dance, "pulling up" contributes to growth and improvement in technique; in life, it's about personal growth, self-improvement, and striving for a better quality of life.
Aesthetic and Presence: In dance, "pulling up" enhances the aesthetic and presence of a performance; in life, it enhances your presence, confidence, and impact in various situations.
Resilience and Perseverance: Both involve resilience and perseverance. In dance, it's about pushing through challenges; in life, it's about overcoming obstacles and setbacks.
While the contexts are different, the fundamental principles of alignment, engagement, effort, and intentional improvement tie "pulling up" in both dance and life together. Both concepts ultimately lead to growth, better outcomes, and a sense of empowerment.
